AMELIA ISLAND
The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival returns for a seventh year with a lineup of internationally heralded stars performing at historic, intimate venues. Violin virtuoso Robert McDuffie has appeared as soloist with many of the major orchestras around the world. He will perform on May 30 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Lynn Harrell On May 31, the Amelia Plantation Chapel will feature the music of master pianist John Kimura Parker and cellist Lynn Harrell. Parker's career, which has taken him from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, includes two command performances for Queen Elizabeth. Harrell, an Amelia Island favorite, is a consummate soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor and teacher. A free community concert will be held June 1 in Central Park featuring the Atlanta Woodwind Quartet playing American favorites from Sousa, Gershwin and Copland.
Helen Nightengale and Beth Newdome The Festival's Opening Gala on June 1 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church will feature the Guarneri String Quartet. Among the most revered and eduring string ensembles in the world, the Guarneri String Quartet will retire after the 2008-2009 season. Pianist Valentina Lisitsa, described by critics as "one of today's most coveted starlets in the main international circuit," will perform on June 5 at Old St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Jacksonville.
Pianist Valentina Lisitsa (righr) will perform at Hear Beethoven played elegantly by pianist Claude Frank on June 7 at the Macedonia AME Church. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, he abandoned Nazi Germany for France in 1937, fled before the advancing German armies in 1940, and ultimately settled in America in 1944. His teachers, including the legendary Arthur Schnabel, trace their educational lineage back to Beethoven.
Rachel Barton Pine Violin virtuoso Rachel Barton Pine will highlight a June 14 concert commemorating the 150th anniversary of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. A child prodigy who made her debut at age seven, she has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras. The Festival's Final Gala on June 15 at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia
Island will feature the American String Quartet. In over three decades of touring, the ASQ
has performed in all 50 states and appeared in virtually every major concert hall around
the world. Dinner will be served following the performance. |
