Historical Profile: Erasmus Darwin Tracy
By Charles Litrico and Kathleen Harper, Ph.D.

As everyone knows, the internet is a wonderful source for conducting research on almost any topic. Sometimes, though, the results of a search can lead to more questions than the original inquiry.
The photo on this page was found in the Photographic Collection of the Florida State Archives. Erasmus Darwin Tracy was a State Senator from Fernandina in 1847-1848 and 1854-1856. He was born in 1810 and died in 1877.

Unfortunately, this was all of the data supplied with the photo. Subsequent research turned up no further information, except this quote from the Semi-Weekly Floridian (Tallahassee), Dec. 5, 1865:
"The editor of the Florida Times, Harrison Reed, Esq., was in attendance on the late State Convention, and in that paper of the 23rd gives a brief sketch of some of the most prominent members, which we quote:  We begin with the President, Col. E.D. Tracy, of Nassau; a stout person, about 5 ft. 6, inclined to corpulency, about 55 years old; with a countenance beaming with benevolence and good humor; a cordial and friendly manner, conveying to all the idea of an honest heart; fond of tobacco and good living, hair and beard profusely sprinkled with grey, and like his dress, allowed the freedom that cares less for show than comfort. He presided with ease and in a most liberal spirit, never allowing his opinions or desires to swerve him from the strictest impartiality; never taking offence when controverted, nor hesitating to accept advice; never suffering his temper to be ruffled or his feelings to become excited. Has had a large legislative experience; was an original opponent of secession, and is a warm supporter of the union; he sustained every measure calculated to restore amnity and concord with the federal government. A man of marked ability and good acquirements; too generous and confiding for a mere politician, but a sound man and a safe legislator; he was an honor to his constituents."
Though little is known for certain about E.D.Tracy, he sounds like he was a credit to his profession.
