SEE AMELIA FROM THE WATER
Story and Photos by Charles Litrico
The best way to beat the summertime heat on Amelia Island is to get in, or on, the
beautiful waters surrounding Florida's Golden Isle.
The most popular activity, of course, is spending some time on
Amelia's beaches. Swimming, fishing and surfing are always at your fingertips. However,
Amelia Island can offer some additional options that are a little unique!
A jet ski tour is a great way to see Amelia Island and its surrounding waters. ________________________ |
For a different look at
Amelia Island from the water, try a jet ski tour. These tours offer you a chance to
circumnavigate the island in a jet ski, allowing you a close-up look at Cumberland Island,
the Amelia River, Nassau Sound and the entire 13-mile stretch of Amelia Island's Atlantic
coastline. You may be fortunate enough to see dolphins and porpoises just a few feet away from you. For more information on these tours, call Island Water Sports at 261-1230. |
If a jet ski is too fast-paced for your style, how about
a peaceful kayak trip through secluded inshore waters. Tours are available for areas
including Big Talbot and Little Talbot islands, Walker's Creek (southeast Amelia Island),
Kingsley Plantation and Hugenot Park. The tours are three hours in length, except for the
Walker's Creek tour, which is two hours. Both single and double kayaks are available. For
information or reservations, please call Kayak Amelia at 321-0697.
If you prefer a larger vessel for your sightseeing, how about a
nature tour by boat? Private Island Excursions offers two-hour tours throughout the local
waterways. You may encounter a variety of wildlife on these tours, including wild horses,
dolphin, alligators and a wide range of birds. Call
206-0537.
Larger still and more luxurious is the 58' Hatteras yacht,
"Island Time." This yacht can accommodate up to 60 people for charters to
surrounding islands, and activities including skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding. jet
skiing and more. For more information, call Wild Island Tours at 491-0070.

For a nostalgic, elegant view of the Amelia River and Cumberland Sound, go
sailing on the schooner Voyager. This 100-foot 1840s replica sails from downtown
Fernandina and lets you view the area in much the same way as it was viewed by pirates and
merchantmen in the 19th century. Call 321-1244 for more information.
This is just a sample of the many fishing, sailing and
sightseeing options available on Amelia Island. Refer to the "Summer Fishing at
