Claiming title as the second oldest women's tennis event in the United States, the 1999 Bausch & Lomb Championships celebrates its 20th anniversary as the tournament returns to Amelia Island this April.

Boasting its slogan, "the best in women's tennis," the 1999 player field is no exception. Among those vying for the $500,000 purse are Lindsay Davenport, the 1997 Bausch & Lomb champion who finished last year ranked #1 in the world, defending champion Mary Pierce, Venus Williams, Monica Seles, 1995 Bausch & Lomb champion Conchita Martinez, Anna Kournikova, Amanda Coetzer, Iva Majoli and Natasha Zvereva.

This tournament has grown to become a favorite of players and spectators alike because of the beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere.

The future of this event looks very bright as Bausch & Lomb has extended its contract as title sponsor through 2002. Amelia Island Plantation has also extended their contract through 2002.

To heighten its "Commitment to Community" campaign, tournament promoter Capital Sports will expand its charities this year to include the Ronald McDonald House. The 1999 Bausch & Lomb Championships will also support the Pilot Club of Jacksonville, Amelia Island Montessori School and the Fernandina YMCA.
