| Bausch & Lomb Championships April 7-13 at Amelia Island Plantation Springtime means the return of the women's professional tennis tour to Amelia Island at the Bausch & Lomb Championships. This year marks the 29th year of world-class tennis at Amelia Island Plantation's Racquet Park. Headlining the draw in 2008 will be the defending champion Tatiana Golovin, six-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and fan favorite and former #1 ranked player Lindsay Davenport.
Defending champion Tatiana Golovin Golovin made Amelia her first career title last year in only her second appearance on green clay. She followed that up with a title in Portoroz and is currently ranked #12 in the world. Williams, another former #1 ranked player, captured the Bausch & Lomb crown in 2002 and has amassed 36 WTA Tour singles titles in her career, along with an Olympic gold medal in both singles and doubles.
Lindsay Davenport won the Bausch & Lomb Davenport, a three-time Bausch & Lomb champion and three-time Grand Slam winner, has recently returned to the tour after giving birth to her son, Jagger Jonathan Leach in June of last year. The results have been amazing - as she captured the title in three of the first five events she entered. Past champions at Amelia include names like Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Sabatini, Seles and Sanchez Vicario. One of the longest running stops on the WTA Tour, this tournament has become a favorite for players and fans alike because of its relaxed setting and casual atmosphere. Special events include the NFPTA Pro Challenge on Monday April 7, where local pros compete for tennis club bragging rights; the Heineken Light Pre-Match Party on Wednesday, April 9; and the Fast Serve Challenge Monday through Thursday.
