| Bausch & Lomb
Championships April 8-14
World-class tennis returns to Amelia at the Bausch & Lomb Championships, which takes place April 8 -14 at Amelia Island Plantation.
This tournament, now in its 23rd year, is an island tradition. It is the second-oldest U.S. event on the women's tour. Bausch & Lomb has been the title sponsor for the last 16 years. The list of past champions here reads like a Who's Who of tennis history, including Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Sabatini and Sanchez-Vicario.
At presstime, players committed to play this year's
event include two-time Bausch & Lomb champion Monica Seles, reigning Wimbledon
and U.S. Open champion Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova and rising Belgian
star Justine Henin. Also expected to play this year are defending champion Amelie
Mauresmo of France and Amanda Coetzer of South Africa.
The Bausch & Lomb Championships will continue its
"Commitment to Community" campaign in 2002. This program benefits selected
charities and causes in the Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach areas, including the Amelia
Island Montessori School, the Pilot Clubs of Jacksonville and Nassau County and the First
Coast Tennis Foundation.
