MARY BORSHARD EXHIBIT AT
CUMMER MUSEUM
By Mary Beth Litrico
Local watercolorist Mary Borshard will be exhibiting
her work at the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, March 14 through April 9. The opening is
scheduled for March 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Each year, the Jacksonville Water-color Society honors two member artists as Artists of
the Year. A jury of society members looks at more than just the artwork. As well, the
artists contribution to the Jacksonville Water-color Society, her support,
participation, board service and national work is considered. Mrs. Borshard is being
honored as one of two Artists of the Year of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society.
| Honors and awards are not new for Mrs.
Borshard. In the past, she has received many awards, including a purchase award by Florida
National Bank, and has received other corporate recognition by AT&T and Seton Hall
University. The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club accepted Mrs. Borshard's work for its
99th Annual Open Exhibition in New York City. Her work has won awards at juried shows from
the Jacksonville Water-color Society and the Hilton Head Art League as well as groups back
home in New Jersey. |
Collections of Mrs. Borshard's art may be found
throughout the United States and in Nassau, Jamaica, England and France.
Like most admired artists, Mrs. Borshard's success has come from both the influence of
talented teachers and her own dedication. She was able to study with several talented
artists, including Don Stone of Maine and the late Edgar Whitney of Connecticut. At one
period Mr. Whitney was the strongest influence in her painting style. One of his quotes
has become a favorite of hers: "take care of the big pieces and the little ones will
fall into place."
| Mrs. Borshard's love for her work is
reflected in her lively yet gentle flower portraits and landscapes familiar to Amelia
Islanders. She also captures the sea and other maritime scenes with her watercolors.
Perhaps unfamiliar to some are her more abstract pieces, including collages and monotypes,
both full of color and life. Visitors and residents of Amelia Island may enjoy her talent at The Waterwheel Art Gallery at 5047 First Coast Highway and downtown at 316A Centre Street and at the Island Art Association Cooperative |
