Books give us adventures, dreams and choices!

The 2002 Book Island Festival will be held Thursday, October 3, through Sunday, October 6.
This writers' and readers' festival is one of the few affordable festivals of its stature in the country (just $15 for a whole day of over 25 workshops and readings) and features a wonderful variety of renowned authors. The selection committee chose authors from mystery to adventure, children's books to historical fiction, poetry to screenplay writing.
The Saturday schedule (Oct. 5) includes readings by the authors, workshops for all stages of reading and writing, and panel discussions from publishers, publicists and agents. Authors include but are not limited to David Ball, author of China Run, John Dufresne, Nancy Bartholomew, Janet Burroway, and Bill Reynolds. For complete schedules go to www.bookisland.org.
The Book Island Festival also includes theatre performances by both the Fernandina Little Theatre and the Amelia Community Theatre. On Thursday evening October 3rd, "The Deadly Divas" (our local mystery writers) will perform at the Fernandina Beach Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Friday, October 4th, holds a full evening of events, including a Tribute to Local Authors (free of charge) beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Hampton Inn & Suites on South 2nd Street; Welcome Author's Party ($7.50 at door) which begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Art & Antiques Centre on Centre Street; and Rock N Roll Readings (no cover charge) which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Palace Saloon. Everyone that loves books is invited to participate!
Saturday's readings, workshops, and book signings begin at 9 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Books Plus, 107 Centre Street. The day includes Lunch with Authors, held at the Atlantic Recreation Center for only $15 per person. Saturday's schedule wraps up with an evening of private dining at Dine With Authors, held at participating local restaurants. If you are interested in dining with your favorite author, please log on to www.bookisland.org for more information.
This year's Book Island Festival has the honor of being affiliated with the international Elderhostel and their Southeast Writer's Workshop. Elderhostel has wrapped their festival around our dates due to the great variety of authors that we have secured. All of the Elderhostel attendees will also be participating in the Saturday workshops and readings. Please contact their chairman, Judi Hill, at JudiHill@aol.com for further information.
