On June 1, 2002, residents of Nassau County joined an array of constitutional officers, county officials and judicial members in celebrating the rededication of the Nassau County Courthouse, which was built in 1892, and is widely described as "the finest surviving Victorian courthouse in Florida."

The Nassau County Courthouse, built in 1892, was rededicated
this past June following a lengthy renovation project.

The effort to save the building, located at Fifth and Centre Streets, was more than just a paint and remodel project - it was a true historic renovation. The utility and usefulness of the structure was maintained, as was its historic correctness. The renovation process followed the guidelines of the State of Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation as well as the local Historic District Council. The authenticity of the original paint colors was determined by historic experts. The front doors were restored rather than replaced. Floors were refinished and exposed in light traffic areas. Other areas were exposed so that citizens could see the original construction of the building.

Following the ribbon-cutting (left), guests were treated to a tour of the renovated courthouse, including the main courtroom on the second floor (right).

The architect for the nearly $4 million project was PQH Architects & Engineers of Jacksonville. Many thanks are in order for their constant contact with state officials to insure that every change made was in keeping with historic standards.
Thanks are also in order to The Auchter Company, general contractor for the project, who were meticulous in their efforts.
